Police in the south of the state are not pleased with the results of Operation Slow Down carried out during the long weekend.

 

The exercise was conducted to improve safety and well being on the roads.

 

Statistics show an increase in offences, with the only decrease revealing 18 less drink driving charges last weekend compared with the same time in 2016.

 

In the whole southern area, 1247 speeding tickets were issued and there were 1,041 other infringements given.

 

Police report that there were 40 major crashes.

 

In the southern area, over the long weekend, one person was killed on the roads.

 

One incident at Mittagong saw a P plater detected allegedly speeding at 157 kilometres an hour in a 90 kilometre zone on the Hume highway.

 

His licence was suspended and number plates confiscated.
